Day 1
Create a model of your own strengths, weaknesses, values and interests in the form of your own choice ( poster board, power point, etc.) based upon your own comfort level of a project. Present it to the class to demonstrate one example of student’s final product.
Model filling out PEP form first filling in the standard project addressed.
Standard: EM. 5.3 Assesses own strengths, weaknesses, values and interests.
First state project goal. “My final product (or goal) is to complete a poster board to share with the class showing my strengths, weaknesses, what I value and what my interests are.”
Then write down goal objective under the presentation column. Have students follow along in writing down the standard with you.
Then model a think aloud for steps to complete project. “I want my project to show my strengths, weaknesses..first I need to brainstorm a list of what my strengths and weaknesses are.” Show a pre-made list of strengths/weaknesses to the class. “I will write brainstorming down for my first step.”
Model writing down while students follow:
Step 1: brainstorm strengths and weaknesses of self
“Then I will prioritize what is really important for me to share. I want 3-4 important strengths and weaknesses.” Return to list of brainstormed topics and model how to prioritize.
Step 2: Prioritize strengths and weakness in order of importance. Pick 3-4 of each.
Then write this down for step 2 while students follow along.
“Now when I look at my standard there are 4 parts. I need to make sure that I am covering all of the standard in my project. Right now I only have half of my standard covered. I need to also show what I value and what my interests are. Interests are easy I know what I like…I like to hike, fish, create things like art.” List other interests on the board. Then again, models how to narrow interests down to 3-4 areas. “What I value is harder to define. When I think about what I value I think about what I could not live without or what would be really hard for me to give up. I can’t live without my family…I have a friend who is paraplegic and cannot move his hands or legs and I think these are things that I really value, my freedom to move around,” List other values and offers class to help lists some ideas.
Continue to write out steps with the students
Step 3: list interest and prioritize them.
Step 4: list values and prioritize them.
“Now that I have all my information, I need to begin to think about how I am going to present it to the class”
Step 5: Plan presentation – create a simple rough draft of what presentation will look like making sure all components are there.
Step 6: Create presentation
Step 7: Present presentation to the class.
Write in Assessment column: Completed project demonstrating 3-4 of my strengths and weaknesses, values and interests
Set a time goal with the students (not to exceed 180 min). Write down time goal in time goal column.
Talk about different presentation materials.
Day 2
Review PEP goal or standard. Look at first few steps and review what steps are needed to present project. Students spend the class period working on project using the PEP form for reference to what step they are on. Review time goal with the expectations to present on day 3. Students work. Towards the ending of the period gather together to reflect on process and how far along students have gotten. Ask “What further steps are needed to complete your goal?”
Day 3
Presentation of project. Celebrate successes of project and discuss the importance of becoming an independent worker.
